In a conference on March 24, UCLA/CNSI launched a “technology incubator” – the first of its kind for UC – in conjunction with UCLA’s Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Sponsored Research (OIP-ISR). The event, held in the CNSI auditorium, brought together faculty entrepreneurs, representatives of industry startups and venture capital firms.

The UCLA on-campus technology incubator will be housed in the CNSI building and will offer four to five separate startup projects access to a total of 1,000 square feet of flexible lab space for 18 to 24 months. Only companies that use technology owned by the UC regents will be admitted, and the startups will pay a modest rent based on Westwood market rates.

The incubator is a “culmination of a list of accomplishments made by UCLA over at least five years and highlights the cohesiveness of UCLA’s family – faculty, staff, administration and students, all coming together behind a goal of creating an improved culture of entrepreneurship,” said Kathryn Atchison, vice provost for OIP-ISR. " Seventeen months ago, the idea of UCI-encouraged business incubators was hatched during a National Academy of Sciences workshop on making Orange County more competitive.

"The first one is focused on medical devices because Orange County is "an internationally recognized center for medical devices," in the words of David Schetter, UCI's assistant vice chancellor, who is spearheading creation of the innovation-boosting incubators.

"Four months ago, Orange Coast Medical Ventures was incorporated, the first of several projects envisioned as part of an Orange County Business Incubation Network.

"Now, the medical-device incubator has signed up five biomedical companies developing products they plan to sell to consumers, physicians, laboratories and fire departments. Several other companies are close to signing up, says Greg Ruehle, chief executive of the incubator. [ocregister] MORE

'101 hub' Biotech Summit looks at opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors

" Entrepreneurs and investors gathered Thursday at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks to network and hear from a panel about the potential for biotech. The SoCal Biotech Ventures Summit came out of the efforts of Brent Reinke, who started the Gold Coast Business Forum for educational and networking for executives, and John Dilts, who started Maverick Angels for investors interested in financing and mentoring startup companies.

" The area along the Highway 101 corridor has the pieces to become a biotechnology hub, several summit participants said. It has the people with the knowledge, investors and local universities.

" Although layoffs at Amgen will affect about 675 employees in Thousand Oaks and even more could be part of the 700 workers companywide who took a voluntary buyout, those starting and investing in biotech companies said this could be what Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties — the "101 corridor" — need to become the next biotech hub.
